All New York vehicle owners should expect a safety inspection on a yearly basis, and it must be done prior to the expiration date. If ownership of the vehicle is transferred, it must go through a safety inspection as well, even if one was performed within the 12 months of the previous ownership. Most vehicles are expected to go through the smog & emissions test at the time of inspection, barring special exceptions. Prior to the inspection, motorists need to bring their driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of auto insurance. If your vehicle passes the inspection, we can send your information electronically to your DMV. If your vehicle fails, it must go through another inspection, but it may be eligible for same-day repairs. Please speak with our service managers for more details.
During the safety inspection we’ll focus on a variety of components the program has deemed important to safely operating a vehicle in the state of New York. Prior to inspection and testing, we recommend you have your vehicle serviced to ensure all problems that could trigger a failed test (like the check engine light) are fixed. We’ll focus on:
Steering, Front End, Suspension, Chassis, Frame, & Wheel Fasteners
Tires (Spares Omitted)
Windshields & Mirrors
Wipers & Blades
Along with your safety inspection, we’ll also perform the smog & emissions test per the request of the state. During the test, most vehicles will go through an On-Board Diagnostics II (OBDII) Inspection, which utilizes the OBDII scanning tool to properly test systems within your vehicle, like the check engine light. During the test, these specific devices will be inspected:
Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve
Positive Crankcase Ventilation System
Air Injection System
Evaporative Emissions Control
Fuel inlet Restrictor
Thermostatic Air Cleaner
For this and more information, including specific inspection methods and what our techs will look for in each component, visit the DMV’s Safety/Emissions Inspection Program page.
